Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity was founded on January 10th, 1899 at Illinois Wesleyan University by 5 men -- Charles Roy Atkinson, Clarence Arthur Mayer, James Carson McNutt, Joseph Lorenzo Settles, and Owen Ison Truitt -- who believed that fraternity brothers should be evaluated based on their character rather than their social class and wealth. They are one of the few frats that never limited membership based on race, color, or creed.

The fraternity has over 245,885 initiated members and 266 active chapters. The fraternity’s official colors are Cherry and Gray. Notable alumni of Tau Kappa Epsilon include former US president Ronald Reagan, NFL star Terry Bradshaw, boxing champ Roy Jones Jr., and famed entertainer Merv Griffin.
