Phi Sigma Sigma sorority, the first sorority that welcomed women of all faiths and backgrounds, was founded on November 26, 1913 at what is now called Hunter College in New York, New York by 10 women: Lillian Gordon Alpern, Josephine Ellison Breakstone, Fay Chertkoff, Estelle Melnick Cole, Jeanette Lipka Furst, Ethel Gordon Kraus, Shirley Cohen Laufer, Claire Wunder McArdle, Rose Sher Seidman, and Gwen Zaliels Snyder.
